La Calle Grita: Art and Political Agency in the
Works of the Assembly of Revolutionary Artists of Oaxaca

Date:  October 11, 2008
Time:  10:00 am - 6:00 pm

Location:  Lenart Auditorium, Fowler Museum at UCLA

La Calle Grita is a one-day conference on public art in Latin America, focusing on the print works of the Asamblea de Artistas Revolucionarios de Oaxaca (ASARO), which highlight the changing cultural and political climates in Oaxaca today. The conference will feature a range of speakers and scholars from the fields of history, art history, anthropology, and labor studies, and will include individual lectures, a roundtable discussion, and a gallery talk. The goal of this program is to create an interdisciplinary forum for a consideration of the works of ASARO and the collective's role as part of a broader sociocultural phenomenon in Oaxaca, thereby situating them within the legacy of political and activist art that has come to characterize much contemporary Latin American visual production.
